How Does Acupuncture Facilitate Recovery?

Chiropractors utilize various tools and techniques to help their patients as much as they can. In an effort to improve the quality of services they provide, some chiropractors have adopted the use of acupuncture.

Acupuncture being included in your chiropractor’s service offerings may seem odd at first, but it makes sense when you consider what the treatment sets out to accomplish. Most of the time, acupuncture is used to stimulate the muscles and nerves inside the body. If that sounds familiar, that’s because many other tools and techniques used by chiropractors do the same thing.

The body immediately senses when an acupuncture needle is inserted. In response, circulation near the area where the needle was inserted increases. The increased circulation near that part of your body will help promote faster recovery. The brain may also trigger other responses that will help you feel better.

Because it facilitates faster recovery and pain relief, many chiropractors use acupuncture to treat their patients who are struggling with chronic discomfort. It’s especially effective for joint pain because the needles can precisely target injured areas. Acupuncture can also treat chronic headaches, anxiety, and stress. Lean on the benefits of acupuncture if you’ve been struggling with your mental health lately.

You should know that acupuncture does not have to be used as a standalone treatment. It arguably works better when it’s paired with other chiropractic services.

We may use traditional needles (which are very thin and virtually painless) or electrical point stimulation (which entails the use of a small probe and a very mild electrical current that is barely felt, if felt at all). The electrical point stimulator is used on children, auriculotherapy (ear acupuncture) and those patients who may be needle phobic.

The conditions treated with acupuncture are almost too numerous to name, but the most common conditions we treat are:

  • Migraines
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Anxiety/Depression
  • Joint Pains (Knees, Shoulders, Hip Pain)
  • General Headaches
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Hot Flashes/Night Sweats
  • Neck & Back Pain
  • Insomnia
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Macular Degeneration

The number of treatments varies (again, depending on the condition, how long the patient has had the condition and the age and general health of the patient). An average case may be 3 or 4 treatments or up to 12 treatments. The typical case is 8 treatments. We sometimes suggest Chinese herbs be taken to help speed up recovery. If herbs are suggested, they are typically taken for 3-6 weeks at a cost of $40.00-$80.00. For your initial appointment please allow 45 minutes to an hour for this appointment and do not eat or drink anything at least one hour before your appointment.

We use a MEAD (Meridian Energy Analysis Device) to measure the meridians and see if they are in excess or deficient. This information allows us to determine which points to treat along the meridian. The MEAD can be affected by certain medications. We ask that if you take medications that you make your appointment earlier in the day, bring your medications with you and take your medications after we have finished the exam. This is especially true if we are evaluating you for Lyme disease, Candida (yeast) or any other chronic infection.
